Policy

It is the policy of the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office to distribute Employment Applications only when actively recruiting for open positions.  The Sheriff’s Office utilizes an Employment Interest Packet for pre-employment screening.  In the event that pre-employment screening requirements have been met, potential applicants will be notified and required to meet with an oral board. Should the applicant meet the requirements of the oral board, they will then be provided with a full application to complete.  

Note: Employment interest forms received will remain on file for one year and potential applicants will be notified only in the event that recruitment for open positions begins within that year.

Employment by a Law Enforcement Agency is not required to attend a Law Enforcement or Corrections Academy.  Applicants interested in obtaining FDLE/CJSTC standards may utilize personal resources to attend training.  Additional information may be obtained through the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

Minimum Requirements

Law Enforcement/Corrections

FLORIDA LAW REQUIRES THE FOLLOWING MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS TO BE CONSIDERED FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT OR CORRECTIONS OFFICER POSITIONS:
  1. Be at least 19 years of age.
  2. Be a High School Graduate or equivalent 
  3. Not have been convicted of any felony or misdemeanor involving perjury or false statement.
  4. Not have received a dishonorable discharged from any Armed Forces of the United States of America. 
  5. Any person after July 1, 1981 pleads guilty or nolo contendere to or found guilty of a felony or a misdemeanor involving perjury or false statement shall not be eligible employment or appointment as an officer, notwithstanding, suspension of sentence or withholding of adjudication.   
  6. Must be finger printed by employing agency.
  7. Must pass a physical examination and drug screening
  8. Must be of good moral character as determined by an extensive background investigation which by agency policy includes a Voice Stress Analysis Examination.
  9. Must meet or surpass all requirements of a background investigation.

Support Staff

  1. Be at least 18 years of age
  2. Must meet minimum job requirements of job applied for.
  3. Be a High School Graduate or equivalent 
  4. Not have been convicted of any felony or misdemeanor involving perjury or false statement.
  5. Not have received a dishonorable discharged from any Armed Forces of the United States of America. 
  6. Any person after July 1, 1981 pleads guilty or nolo contendere to or found guilty of a felony or a misdemeanor involving perjury or false statement shall not be eligible employment or appointment as an officer, notwithstanding, suspension of sentence or withholding of adjudication.   
  7. Must be finger printed by employing agency.
  8. Pass a drug screening, a physical examination may or may not be required.
  9. Must be of good moral character as determined by an extensive background investigation which by agency policy includes a Voice Stress Analysis Examination.
  10. Must meet or surpass all requirements of a background investigation.
  11. A test of basic adult education, TABE, examination may be required for persons that are not currently employed or have not been active in the work force within the past 3 years at the discretion of the Sheriff.
